How to help your children adjust to moving to new house

How to prepare your children to move to a new house and make it easy for them.

Sometimes, we may turn a blind eye to simple things that impact our children negatively, but we think that time will heal their hearts and minds. Things like moving to a new house in another city, when children are forced to leave all of their friends and memories behind. In this article, we will tell you some tips to prepare your children psychologically for the moving day.

Before Moving Day

Be positive! Tell them about all the great things about their new home. If you are moving to a new city, make sure to point out the advantages. For example, if you are moving to a coastal city, tell them about the sea, beaches and fantastic weather. Talk about the wide space of the new home and the services and benefits they will enjoy.

Benefits first! What matters the most to your kids is their gains after moving. So, tell them about their bedrooms, toys and stuff, and their own space in the house.

Your children have fears for moving to a new place. They’re worried about losing their stuff or that things won’t go the way they like. Accept their feelings, they are 100% true to them, especially that they will part with their friends. So, tell them that you feel them and respect their fears and worries.

Listen to your children and be aware that they should feel that their opinions and feelings matter to you. Ask them to speak up and express their wishes for the new house. If you’re still in the furnishing phase, you can listen to their ideas about the colors and styles of the new home.

Make them aware of what they need to know; their new school, new areas around the house that they can visit and enjoy, what is the color of their rooms and so on.

Use books and pictures to tell your children about the advantages of their new home and how the furniture is moved. Show them pictures of trucks while moving the furniture to the new home and explain the process.

Give your children the chance to say goodbye to their friends. You can have a nice little party where your children give them souvenirs. Make sure that your children can easily contact their friends to feel safe.

Moving Day

Moving day will be overwhelming and full of details and tiny things that you should take care of; starting from trucks and boxes, then unpacking and arranging stuff. On this day, ask one of your trustworthy relatives to take care of your kids not to overload them and make them feel how hard it is to move, and also to relieve their sad feelings.

After Moving Day

Make your children share responsibility and planning. Ask them to carry light boxes and manageable stuff and put them in place.

Leave their stuff to the end so that they feel safe till the last moment.

Leave them some toys to play with during the move day so as not to get bored.

Throw a surprise for your children when reaching the new home. It could be new toys or some creative ideas to catch their attention.

Start with your children’s rooms and arrange it as they like. Respect their opinions and do your best to spend as much time as you can with them in the new home, especially in the first period.

Dedicate some time to have fun with your children and take a walk together in the neighborhood and visit the nearby places.

Keep the usual routine of your children. They will be facing lots of changes, so try to keep their daily routine as it was.

Call their friends at the earliest time possible so that they put their mind at rest about the easiness of getting in touch with them.

Help them make new connections with their neighbours and classmates in their new school.
